Diwali is just around the corner….it is that time of the year when one and all will want to regale in the lights, express euphoria and pray for happiness. Daddy will provide everything and then chill out in peace with a game of cards hoping for his lady luck to shine this particular year and mommy dearest will entice the whole family with her culinary skills and gastronomic delights that will make us go crazy. Children will be hunky-dory with their pranks and noise with crackers while grandpas and grandmoms will be around everywhere with their precautionary sermons. Lights and crackers and sweets and blessing- everything will be plenty.

But wait!! These are no normal times. This is 2020 and we need to be careful. A carefree and a callous moment can spell disaster for us and our families. The COVID situation has modified the rules of the game but we will not let the pandemic come in the way of fun and frolic during this Diwali. At the same time, we need to be conscious of things which can make things go awry. The virus situation has not at all waned and no one can predict its flight from here on. We have to regulate certain things which are in our hands. It will be absolutely necessary for all of us to do what we have so painstakingly done over the last 6 months and something more to keep the razzmatazz of the festival of lights going. Rest assured, if we abide by the following, we still can have a rocking Diwali this year:

  • Just wear masks- It is a no brainer that wearing the masks has been the current global intervention for the virus without any cure at present. Likewise, we will all maintain the masks on our faces while celebrating the day.
  • Must place sanitizers at a distance from the fire- Sanitizers contain alcohol and we all know that it is readily combustible. We must be extremely mindful and awake to this facet to prevent any untoward incident.
  • Refrain from using the sanitizer before lighting candles or crackers- One careless moment can change the life for worse. Be totally careful not to use the sanitizer before lighting anything on the Diwali day. Instead, keep the soap and water at a handy distance for frequent use.
  • Do not light firecrackers- Apart from the noise, air pollution and the environmental damage that they can inflict, the firecrackers are wastage of money at a time when inflation is galloping in the country.
  • Maintain ventilation- Keep the windows in your homes open at frequent intervals to let air gush in and prevail freshness.
  • Social distancing- Remember that only by maintaining a good physical distancing among one another can we prevent the virus from attacking us.
  • Elders must stay indoors- This is very important for the older generation this Diwali with the rage of the virus making them more vulnerable.
  • Eat at home- It will be advisable that this Diwali we all cook at home and not venture outside to eat.

Firing the crackers will release the deadly Nitrite, dioxide and carbon monoxide in the air which is more than potent to adversely affect the lungs as well as the environment. Not only would it alone be sufficient to inflict deadly damage on the lungs but during these trying COVID times, it will surely debilitate the immunity of the body making it more prone to the virus. If at all, the temptation is too strong, it is advisable to burst the green crackers which do not spread pollution and release harmful gases. We need to educate the young ones about this aspect and something which we must pursue religiously this year and advise others to follow suit.

Have a safe, enjoying and a worthy Diwali this year and remember that being conscious about the interventions will make us all celebrate a lot more Diwalis in the years to come. Yes! One last thing…. Do not forget to keep your pets away from the sound and do gift your loved ones with something special to keep the moments of joy remembered forever.
